INCORPORATING FESM INTO FUEL ACCUMULATION CURVES

PROJECT LEAD: Rachael Nolan
LEAD INSTITUTION: Western Sydney University
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: NSW RFS
PROJECT SIZE: Small <$100,000
DURATION: 6 months

This short project aims to build on previous research to produce operationally useable models of fuel loads. This project aims to modify fuel accumulation curves to account for fire severity. Fuel accumulation curves are used operationally across NSW to estimate fuel loads, which are then used as inputs for fire behaviour models and fire extent severity mapping (FESM). However, these curves do not account for fire severity.

This work will build on previous research conducted for the NSW Bushfire Risk Management Research Hub. It will utilise data collected during the Hub and through the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s (DCCEEW) Applied Bushfire Science Program.
