FIRETOOLS SEVERITY, SEASONALITY & LANDSCAPE METRICS INTEGRATION & FESM VALIDATION

PROJECT LEAD: Grant Williamson
LEAD INSTITUTION: University of Tasmania
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: NSW DCCEEW-NPWS
PROJECT SIZE: Large >$200,000
DURATION: 3 years

FireTools Cloud and FireTools SDC allow rapid mapping of vegetation state based on fire history data and tolerable fire intervals, to help fire managers plan for prescribed burning and ecosystem management. This project aims to enhance FireTools and related products by integrating FESM (Fire Extent and Severity Mapping) and other analytical features to meet end-user needs. The project involves implementation of a more informative Tolerable Fire Interval (TFI) thresholds system and fire severity thresholds through analysis of FESM data early in the process, the application of fire seasonality impacts on vegetation state, and the analysis of species functional group-level impacts as a post-processing step. It will also incorporate field-based verification of FESM data to improve FESM modelling and incorporate local knowledge.
