EFFECTS OF FIRE RETARDANTS ON BIODIVERSITY

PROJECT LEAD: Mark Ooi
LEAD INSTITUTION: University of New South Wales
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: NSW DCCEEW-NPWS
PROJECT SIZE: Medium >$50,000
DURATION: 2 years

Fire retardants are widely used in fire-fighting activities. The impact of fire retardants on the natural environment, including both species and broader ecosystems, remain largely unquantified. Given the lack of knowledge surrounding retardant use, it is difficult to quantify any potential impacts, if any, on biodiversity. This project provides an opportunity to quantify impacts and to develop an understanding of how the use of fire retardants can be applied to ensure the best outcomes for the environment in the context of fire management requirements.
